Studies at Faculty

Mathematics was present at the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy from the beginning of our university. The first rector of the Mining Academy was a mathematician - Professor Anthony Hoborski. In 1969, there were several departments of mathematics and geometry, operating at different faculties. The Institute of Mathematics as an interdepartmental unit conducted classes in all faculties. In 1997, after a decision by the Senate, the Institute of Mathematics was transformed into the Faculty of Applied Mathematics. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics and postgraduate. Programmes of study highlight the modern application of mathematics in other fields of knowledge, particularly in banking and finance, computer science, management, biology, materials engineering, electronics, automation, mechanical and telecommunications. This allows graduates to work with specialists from other disciplines and facilitates employment in industry, banking, insurance sector, IT industry, government, science and education. Among the branches of mathematics and its applications, around which focus the scientific activities of the Faculty staff, we have discrete mathematics with a particular emphasis on graph theory, functional analysis, computational mathematics, statistics, differential equations, geometry, stochastic analysis and its applications in financial mathematics. Faculty have the right to award doctorates in mathematics.

At the Faculty of Applied Mathematics AGH we have full-time and extra-curricular studies: - first degree - second degree majoring in mathematics. The second degree may be in six specialties, or without any choice. The Faculty of Applied Mathematics AGH also carries out postgraduate studies.

Why study math?
Mathematics is the science of the beautiful, versatile and useful. Allows it enables us to construct models of physical phenomena, chemical, technical, economic, social, while providing a simulation tool (now mostly on computer) based on these models. As a result, we can predict the behavior of various physical structures and natural phenonema. Once proven a mathematical theorem is never outdated, so the acquired knowledge during studies will not be dependent on changing technologies, space, time, and will not be subject to different fashions. However, it can be used in various situations, and may be restricted only our own ingenuity and imagination. During the last several years we have witnessed tremendous growth in computer technology. Perhaps soon we will see the first quantum computers, devices that will be vastly more efficient than today's classical computers.

Students and graduates can not only count on an interesting job in the computer industry, insurance or even financial, but can also participate in important research in computational methods, discrete mathematics, mathematical modeling and computer science or probability and statistics. Experience teaches us that mathematics graduates regardless of specialty are very well prepared to quickly learn new skills specific to a given field or business. The area of graduate employment is developing intensively in Poland, the economy is very broad: from large industrial facilities, financial institutions, insurance companies, research institutes for education at all levels, including at home and abroad. Finally there is the possibility of scientific work in economic sciences, computer science, engineering and the sciences, mathematics.
